Fatal blast in Khmelnytskyi claims two lives, search continues

The number of people killed in an explosion in the apartment building in Khmelnytskyi has risen to two. Emergency and rescue operations are ongoing.

Serhii Tiurin, Head of the Khmelnytskyi Regional Military Administration, reported this on Telegram, Ukrinform reports.

At 02:24, the body of a woman was found under the rubble of the residential building in Khmelnytskyi that was destroyed by an explosion.

“At night, information was received about a possibility that another person might have been inside the building. Unfortunately, this has been tragically confirmed,” the regional chief announced.

According to updated information from the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, the explosion destroyed nine apartments and damaged 15 more. A child is among the injured.

Additional forces have now joined the clearing of debris: a rescue climbers division of the Main Mobile Rescue Center and a special forces division DELTA. Emergency and rescue operations continue around the clock.

The cause of the explosion is being determined.

As Ukrinform previously reported, an explosion occurred in a multi-story residential building in Khmelnytskyi, with a preliminary cause believed to be a gas leak.
