Brussels mini-summit shows that Europe supports Poroshenko in elections
Representative of Poroshenko's election headquarters Dmytro Medvedev said this at a briefing, an Ukrinform correspondent reported.
“Last night, the informal Ukraine-EU mini-summit took place in Brussels. The mini-summit was attended by President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko, President of the European Council Donald Tusk, President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the European Parliament Antonio Tajani. This was a clear sign that Europe informally supports Petro Poroshenko in the presidential election,” he said.
The diplomatic protocol does not allow EU leaders to declare their support "directly."
"It would be strange if they [EU leaders] campaigned for any candidate. But the invitation of the president to such a mini-summit in the EU almost 10 days before the election is a clear message of which candidate the European Union sees as the next president of Ukraine," Medvedev noted.
At the same time, he adds that Poroshenko remains the only presidential candidate in the election scheduled for March 31, the program of which includes provision for Ukraine’s preparation for membership in the EU and NATO.
