Slovakia halts emergency electricity supplies to Ukraine – Fico

Fico made the statement on X, according to Ukrinform.

“I have fulfilled what I declared on Saturday: ‘If oil supplies to Slovakia are not restored by Monday, I will ask SEPS, the state-owned joint-stock company, to halt emergency electricity supplies to Ukraine. In January 2026 alone, these emergency deliveries needed to stabilize the Ukrainian energy grid were twice as high as for the entire year 2025’,” the statement reads.

Earlier, Ukrinform reported that Slovakia also announced it was halting diesel fuel deliveries to Ukraine, citing disruptions in the transit of Russian oil through the Druzhba pipeline.

At the same time, former Slovak economy minister and energy expert Karel Hirman said that Fico’s government did not have the authority to ban electricity exports to Ukraine, despite the Prime Minister’s threats.

Hungary has also signaled it may consider stopping electricity and gas exports to Ukraine if Kyiv does not restore Russian oil transit. Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stressed that the transit problems were caused by Russia’s aggression and its strikes on the Druzhba pipeline infrastructure.
