Sweden has approved the allocation of EUR 4 million for a new international technical assistance project in Ukraine, Institutional Cooperation on EU-Accession in the Environment and Waste Sector (ENSU27).

The relevant statement was made by the Ukrainian Environmental Protection and Natural Resources Ministry, following a working trip to Sweden, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

The budget of the Institutional Cooperation on EU-Accession in the Environment and Waste Sector (ENSU27) project is about EUR 4 million. It will be implemented until 2027 and include a number of cooperation areas.

In particular, Swedish experts will help Ukraine prepare for a bilateral meeting with the European Commission as part of the official screening and negotiation process under Chapter 27 ‘Environment and Climate Change’, jointly work on the analysis of European regulations and develop justifications for transitional periods that Ukraine would potentially need to implement them.

Among other things, the project involves active work with four clusters in Ukraine on the implementation of the National Waste Management Plan, namely in the Ivano-Frankivsk, Odesa, Kharkiv and Poltava regions. Cooperation is expected to cover 38 Ukrainian communities that will exchange experience with 40 Swedish municipalities and 16 waste management operators.

In addition, the Swedish side will help Ukraine implement the provisions of the Minamata Convention and the Stockholm Convention, as well as create a register of chemical substances and integrate it into the European one.

A reminder that the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine approved the National Waste Management Plan until 2033, which provides for covering 85% of Ukrainians with household waste management services by the said year.
