Japan introduces new sanctions against Russia

The government of Japan has introduced new sanctions against Russia over its invasion of Ukraine.   

According to NHK, the additional ban imposed on August 9, covers 758 items, including automobiles and optical equipment.

Used Japanese cars, which are popular in Russia, are also subject to the broadened embargo. Auto-related items include gasoline and diesel cars with an engine displacement of over 1,900 cc, hybrid and electric vehicles, and parts such as tires for large vehicles.

The list of items banned for exports to the aggressor country includes a wide range of auto-related items and accessories for such vehicles, in particular, spare parts, various types of equipment, including optical equipment, and tires.

The Japanese government had earlier prohibited exports of trucks and luxury vehicles to Russia.

The United States and the European Union have already widened their restrictions on vehicle exports to Russia. The move comes after leaders of the G7 nations agreed to strengthen sanctions against Russia at their summit in Hiroshima in May.
