Japan extends sanctions against Russia

It is noted that Japan has already banned the supply of premium cars worth over 6 million yen ($43,000) to Russia since April last year.

However, the latest decision of the Japanese government against Russia from August 9 will additionally cover a ban on the supply of new and used gasoline and diesel vehicles with a volume of more than 1,900 cubic centimeters, electric and hybrid vehicles, as well as tires for large vehicles.

Japanese cars are in great demand in Russia, so the new ban will deal another blow to Moscow amid its military invasion of Ukraine.

In 2022, the value of Japanese exports to Russia amounted to 603.9 billion yen (about $4.3 billion), which is 30% less than in the previous year. At the same time, more than half of this figure was made up of passenger cars, most of which were used.

In total, about 750 items have been added to the Japanese blacklist of exports to Russia, including iron and other metals, boilers, and fibers that can be used to support Russia's industrial activities.

The new goods banned from export to Russia account for about 20% of the value of what was exported to Russia in 2021.

As Ukrinform reported, last week, a number of countries, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand, imposed new sanctions against Russia for the war in Ukraine.
