Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal discussed strengthening Ukraine’s energy resilience and recovery, sanctions against the Russian Federation with Executive Vice-President of the European Commission Frans Timmermans.

"We work towards strengthening Ukraine's energy resilience. I discussed key issues in this area with Executive Vice-President of the European Commission Frans Timmermans in Kyiv today," Shmyhal posted on Telegram.

He added that Ukraine is actively working with European partners to get support in four areas: demilitarization of the Zaporizhzhia NPP, power equipment supply, opportunities to import electricity from the EU, and sanctions against Russia.

"We expect that the 10th package [of sanctions] will contain restrictive measures against Russia's nuclear industry, in particular, Rosatom. The aggressor must be punished for attacks on Ukraine's energy industry and crimes against the environment," Shmyhal added.

The officials also touched upon the issues of the post-war reconstruction of Ukraine.

"Reconstruction should take place in line with the Green Deal. Ukraine has significant potential in the field of alternative energy which will help Europe to quickly abandon Russian fossil resources," the Head of Government noted.

Shmyhal thanked Timmermans for the initiative to start a strategic partnership between Ukraine and the EU and noted that he expects to conclude a corresponding memorandum in the near future.

As reported, Ukraine’s energy system suffered 11 enemy missile and 14 drone attacks. Damage to generation facilities and backbone networks is complicated and large-scale. The recovery still requires significant resources and time.

Massive attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure have been ongoing since October 10.
