IAEA calls for creating security zone around ZNPP immediately

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in its report following its mission’s visit to the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant, Europe’s largest station, which was captured by Russian troops on March 4, has called for the immediate creation of a safety zone around the facility.

The 50-page document states that the security zone is necessary so that the agency can monitor the situation at the NPP.

The report also recommends improving the working conditions of Ukrainian personnel who have been keeping the NPP operable despite Russian military presence.

“The condition that the operating staff is subject to constant high stress and pressure while operating the NPP is not sustainable and could lead to increased human error with implications on nuclear safety,” the IAEA stressed.

The inspectors also note the presence of significant damage found at the station, as well as the presence of Russian troops and military equipment, particularly in the turbine halls.

“The ongoing shelling could damage other critical plant systems and equipment, and lead to more severe consequences, including unlimited release of radioactive materials to the environment,” the report reads.

The inspectors also called for an end to all hostilities that could affect the NPP’s power supply systems.

As Ukrinform reported earlier, on Tuesday the UN Security Council will consider the situation at the Zaporizhia NPP, at Russia’s request. IAEA Director General Raphael Grossi is expected to address the UNSC.

The IAEA mission, led by Grossi, visited the Zaporizhia NPP on September 1. On the same day, the general director and all most of the mission members left the site, captured by Russia.
