Ukraine and France have signed a contract for the construction of five ships for the Ukrainian State Border Guard Service, the Ukrainian Interior Ministry's liaisons department has said.

"France's shipbuilding company OCEA and Ukraine's NIBULON on November 30 signed a contract for the construction of five ships for the Ukrainian State Border Guard Service. Production will be set up in Mykolaiv," the report reads.

In total, Ukrainian border guards will receive 20 such ships, with 15 of them to be built in France. The transfer of the first ship will take place in Odesa. The vessel is to be launched on December 9. In January 2022, the ship's crew will undergo special retraining with French specialists.

The implementation of such a project became possible due to the signing in 2019 of a framework intergovernmental agreement between Ukraine and France. Under the agreement, the French government and leading European banks provide EUR 136.5 million worth of loans for the construction of French ships, with some of them to be built in Ukraine.
