National security committee recommends parliament to approve bill on oligarchs at second reading

The Verkhovna Rada Committee on National Security, Defense and Intelligence recommends that Parliament adopt at second reading the bill "On Prevention of Threats to National Security Related to Excessive Influence of Persons Who Have Significant Economic or Political Weight in Public Life (Oligarchs)".

Iryna Vereshchuk, the head of the subcommittee on state security and defense of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on National Security, Defense and Intelligence, told Ukrinform that the relevant decision was made at a meeting of the committee on Friday, September 17.

She also said that the Verkhovna Rada is planning to consider the bill at a plenary meeting on Thursday, September 23.

As Ukrinform reported, on July 1, the Verkhovna Rada approved at first reading bill No.5599, submitted by the President of Ukraine, “On Prevention of Threats to National Security Related to Excessive Influence of Persons Who Have Significant Economic or Political Weight in Public Life (Oligarchs)".

The document provides for amendments to some laws in order to create a register of persons that have significant economic or political weight in public life (oligarchs), determines the procedure and consequences of inclusion of persons in the register, introduction of declaration by public servants of contacts with the persons included in the specified register.

The second reading of the bill received more than 1,270 amendments.
