Polish PM accuses key EU states of financing Russian army through Nord Stream 2
The politician said this in an interview with Financial Times.
"As some people bluntly say, Nord Stream 2 is paying with our European money for Russian weapons and Russian armor. So I think it is really frustrating when we see such a project having such support from key members states of the EU," Morawiecki said.
According to him, the gas pipeline will undermine European energy security by increasing the continent's dependence on Russia.
Morawiecki condemned NATO's rapprochement with Russia, recalling that the Alliance is "the primary source of security" for Poland and that Europe could not "pretend nothing has happened in Ukraine, Belarus or Georgia," countries where Moscow has intervened with varying degrees of assertiveness.
The Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline is being built by Russia's Gazprom in partnership with European companies Engie, Uniper, OMV, Shell, and Wintershall. The project is to be completed by the end of 2019.
Ukraine opposes the construction of Nord Stream 2. U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to block the project with sanctions.
