Experts: Average Ukrainian eats 12kg of fresh apples annually
. In the fruit basket of Ukrainians the largest share belongs to apples. Each year, the average citizen of Ukraine consumes about 12 kg of the fresh fruits, according to an expert survey conducted by APK-Inform: Vegetables and Fruits.
"The closest competitor of apples is bananas, its consumption is estimated at 5.5 kg per capita. Oranges and tangerines are even less eaten by Ukrainians - only 3.4 kg per year. Among the fruits of local production second in the ranking in terms of consumption goes watermelon with 10 kg per year per capita in Ukraine. Approximately 3.2 kg of melons, pears, peaches, apricots are annually eaten by Ukrainians annually," the study findings show.
According to experts, a record consumption of apple is due the fact that the fruit is present on the market throughout the year, in contrast to other seasonal fruits. Also, it is among the most accessible types of fruits for the Ukrainians because of the relatively low prices and high volume production in farmlands.
At the same time, the consumption of apples in Ukraine though is the highest among other fruits, but still significantly lags behind the developed countries. Thus, the average apples consumption in the EU is around 18 kg per year per capita.
A reminder that last week a number of large producers of apples in Ukraine reduced selling prices, which was the main requirement of exporters for the resumption of apple supply to Russia.
Today, winter varieties of apples are shipped for export from Ukraine at an average of 0.27-0.29 /kg. This is 10-15% below the price that Ukrainian farmers declared last week.
