Lithuania will provide the Ukrainian military with a batch of bulletproof vests and supply a COVID-19 vaccine to Ukraine, Speaker of the Seimas of Lithuania Viktorija Cmilyte-Nielsen has said in an interview with Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.

"It seems to us that sending instructors is a very important segment. It is appropriate in the current situation. […] We are also providing quite pragmatic assistance, such as bulletproof vests, which are to arrive in Ukraine by July. That's about 700 vests, which we hope will be able to protect those at the front," she said.

Cmilyte-Nielsen said that Lithuania was also going to supply Ukraine with a COVID-19 vaccine. She did not specify the exact amount of the vaccine, noting that the vaccine will be sent to residents of eastern Ukraine.

"We have discussed with both the President of Ukraine and the Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada that we will be able to provide a certain, perhaps symbolic, number of vaccines for the Donbas region, but we still hope that it will be able to protect a significant number of people," she said.

According to her, the Eastern Partnership countries, which are not members of the European Union, are at a disadvantage. That is why Lithuania is trying to raise this issue on the international stage "whenever there is such an opportunity." "The issue of vaccines is very important to the Eastern Partnership countries and to Ukraine in particular. And here we can show our solidarity and help our neighbors," Cmilyte-Nielsen said.

Earlier it was reported Lithuania would provide lethal weapons to Ukraine and the assistance of Lithuanian instructors.

Cmilyte-Nielsen is on a visit to Ukraine. On May 12, Verkhovna Rada Speaker Dmytro Razumkov had a joint briefing with her. On May 13, Razumkov and Chmilite-Nielsen began a working trip to Kherson region.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he considered the visit of the speaker of the Seimas of Lithuania to Ukraine to be evidence of the high dynamics of the political dialogue between the two states.
