More than 3,350 civilians killed over past six years of war in Donbas

"More than 3,350 civilians have been killed over the past six years. More than 7,000 people have been wounded. Among them, 147 children have been killed and 383 children have been wounded," Benjamin Moreau, Deputy Head of the United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine, said at the international conference "Protection of Civilians in Armed Conflict" in Kyiv, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

The representative of the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission stressed that the Government of Ukraine should implement a set of measures to pay compensations to the conflict victims. "The needs of the victims of such a conflict must be respected. Also, it is necessary to think about the future of the country, the need to further build peace and pay social benefits. The Government must ensure this regardless of whether its citizens live in Donetsk or Sevastopol," Moreau said.

The international conference "Protection of Civilians in Armed Conflict" is held in Kyiv on February 25 on the initiative of Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights Liudmyla Denisova and the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Ukraine.

A key topic of the conference is respect for human rights in armed conflict and the impact of occupation on the rights and freedoms of citizens.

More than 150 people, including Ukrainian lawmakers, representatives of diplomatic missions, local self-government bodies, international human rights organizations and civil society, take part in the event.
