Police and the Security Service of Ukraine have foiled and detained a Russian agent who was planning a terrorist attack against Ukrainian servicemen in the Kharkiv region.

This was reported on the website of the National Police of Ukraine, according to Ukrinform.

“Police officers, together with SSU operatives, established that the man had been recruited via a messenger app by representatives of Russian special services. Acting on their instructions, he was to manufacture an explosive device and detonate a vehicle carrying Ukrainian servicemen in the Kharkiv region,” the report states.

According to the investigation, the perpetrator had been promised USD 2,000 by his handler for carrying out the terrorist attack.

Law enforcement officers uncovered the 53-year-old accomplice of the enemy at the preparation stage of the crime.

“By that time, the man had already received funds from his Russian handler to make the explosive device and was searching for vehicles used by Ukrainian defenders. To conceal his activities, he employed methods of operational secrecy,” police reported.

During authorized searches of the suspect’s residence and vehicle, officers seized a mobile phone containing evidence of communication with the Russian “handler,” as well as an explosive device and other material evidence.

The man was detained in accordance with procedural law. SSU investigators have notified him of suspicion under Part 1 of Article 14 and Part 2 of Article 258 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (preparation for committing a terrorist act).

As reported by Ukrinform, the Security Service of Ukraine earlier detained a Russian agent who had been directing air attacks on Kharkiv.
