Ukrainian refugee killed in United States

The woman, with multiple stab wounds, was found at the East/West Boulevard train station in the South End area of Charlotte around 10:00 p.m. on Friday, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department reported on Saturday.

Zarutska had recently arrived in the United States, seeking safety from the war and hoping for a new beginning, according to a GoFundMe page created to raise funds for Zarutska’s aunt and other family members.

Police have not yet specified whether the killing occurred on the train, on the platform, or nearby. However, it was noted that when officers arrived at the scene, they arrested a 34-year-old homeless man, Decarlos Brown. He was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. He has been charged with first-degree murder.

According to court documents, Brown had been arrested several times since 2011 on charges of theft, armed robbery, and threats. Almost all of the charges were dropped.

As reported by Ukrinform, a Ukrainian minor was arrested in Germany on suspicion of killing a fellow citizen and her child.
