First sentence for Kherson shelling: Russian Black Sea Fleet lieutenant colonel sentenced to life in absentia
According to Ukrinform, this was reported by the Security Service of Ukraine.
Zharkikh is the commander of the 8th Artillery Regiment of the Black Sea Fleet's Coastal Defense Forces.
It has been established that the convicted man's subordinates carried out a massive strike on the city from the left bank of the Kherson region.
Residential buildings, a hospital, and other social facilities were hit by Russian artillery fire. As a result of the enemy shelling, at least 13 civilians were killed and more than 60 were wounded to varying degrees.
For the killing of civilians and the destruction of social infrastructure in the regional center, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin honored the 8th Artillery Regiment by awarding it the title of “Guards.”
Based on materials from the Security Service of Ukraine, Zharkikh was found guilty under Part 2 of Article 28 and Part 2 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — war crimes that caused the death of people, committed by a group of individuals acting in collusion.
The Office of the Prosecutor General, for its part, emphasized that the verdict against this defendant is the first in the proceedings concerning the Russian army's strikes on Kherson.
As reported by Ukrinform, three Russian soldiers were sentenced to 12 years in prison for illegally detaining a local resident and committing sexual acts against her during the temporary occupation of the village of Yahidne in the Chernihiv region.
