Russian commander sentenced in absentia for torturing civilians in Mykolaiv region

The commander of a Russian special operation forces unit, who had given orders and participated in the torture of civilians during the temporary capture of Snihurivka, Mykolaiv region, was sentenced in absentia to 10 years in prison.

This was reported by Ukraine’s National Police, Ukrinform saw.

As the investigation learned, the commander of the 2nd special operations forces group, 23rd SOF detachment Obereg, Russian National Guard’s Ural District during the temporary capture of Snihurivka gave orders for the illegal detention and torture of local residents and himself participated in the atrocities.

His group illegally imprisoned three local men and a woman.

The Russians tortured the men, including subjecting them to an execution imitation, demanding from the civilians information on the location of Ukraine’s military units, artillery spotters, and weapons.

The woman faced execution threats and psychological pressure.

In February 2024, under the procedural guidance of the Mykolaiv Regional Prosecutor's Office, investigators charged the Russian officer in absentia with cruel treatment of the civilian population and the order to commit such actions (Article 438 Part 1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).

The court found the Russian commander guilty of committing crimes, sentencing him to 10 years in prison.

As Ukrinform reported earlier, the Security Service of Ukraine pressed charges against a Russian accomplice who had run a correctional colony in the territory of the "LPR" where Ukrainian prisoners of war are held in inhumane conditions.
