Ukrainian Navy unit strikes sanctioned tanker MARQUISE
This was reported by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on Facebook, Ukrinform reports.
According to the statement, in the morning of April 29, a Ukrainian Navy unit hit the tanker MARQUISE (Cameroon flag, empty, cargo capacity of over 37,000 tons).
At the time of the strike, the vessel was drifting about 210 km southeast of Tuapse, Russia, without its AIS signal enabled, and was likely waiting at sea for loading from another ship.
AIS (Automatic Identification System) is a maritime tracking system used to identify vessels and provide data such as their dimensions, course, and other navigational information.
The strike hit the stern area of the vessel, including the propeller-rudder section and the engine room.
The MARQUISE tanker is under sanctions by Ukraine, the United Kingdom, the European Union, Switzerland, New Zealand, and Canada, and was reportedly used by Russia for the illegal transportation of petroleum products.
The extent of the damage is still being clarified.
As previously reported by Ukrinform, shadow fleet tankers transporting Russian oil through the Baltic Sea have begun avoiding Swedish waters after Sweden started inspecting ships at sea and checking their documentation.
