SBU counterintelligence detained in Mykolaiv a man who, on Russia's instructions, was supposed to plant an improvised explosive device on a service vehicle used by Ukrainian defenders.

According to Ukrinform, the SBU reported this on its website.

The suspect was detained in a rented apartment while assembling a remotely triggered bomb. The perpetrator turned out to be a 20‑year‑old laborer from Kyiv.

It was established that the young man was carrying out tasks for Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB). He came to the attention of the Russian intelligence service when he was looking for easy earnings in Telegram channels.

Over a video call, his Russian handler instructed him on how to make an explosive device using improvised materials. After that, the agent was sent to Mykolaiv, where he rented an apartment using FSB funds and began assembling the homemade bomb.

The enemy accomplice reinforced the device with metal nuts and equipped it with a mobile phone for remote detonation. Disguised as a fire extinguisher, the explosive was supposed to be placed under a parked vehicle of Ukrainian defenders and detonated remotely once they approached.

During searches in the suspect's temporary residence, law enforcement officers seized components of the explosive device and a smartphone with evidence of his cooperation with the FSB.

Investigators have notified the suspect of charges under Part 1 of Article 14 and Part 2 of Article 258 of Ukraine's Criminal Code — preparation for a terrorist act committed by a group of persons by prior conspiracy.

The perpetrator is in custody without the right to bail. He faces up to 12 years in prison with confiscation of property.

As reported, in November Ukrainian authorities neutralized a Russian agent network that had been preparing caches with components for improvised explosive devices intended for terrorist attacks in one of the western regions.
