Russia attacks gas transmission facility in Odesa region, hits Ukraine gas supply route

“On the night of August 6, 2025, Russia carried out a targeted attack on a gas infrastructure facility—a compressor station of the Ukrainian gas transmission system operator in the Odesa region near the Ukrainian-Romanian border,” the statement said.

According to the Ministry, this compressor station was used as part of the route connecting Greek LNG terminals with Ukrainian gas storage facilities via the Trans-Balkan gas pipeline, through which LNG from the US and test volumes of Azerbaijani gas had already been supplied.

According to Energy Minister Svitlana Hrynychuk, this is a clear signal to all of Europe, which plans to completely abandon Russian natural gas by 2027.

The Russian attack, the minister stressed, indicates that the Russian Federation will use all available means and levers to destroy the energy independence of Europeans and alternative gas supply routes.

Earlier, it was reported that a main gas pipeline was damaged in the Izmail district of Odesa region as a result of a hostile drone attack on the night of August 6. The fire destroyed production equipment.

As a result of the damage to the main gas pipeline, 2,500 subscribers were temporarily disconnected.

The Trans-Balkan gas corridor is a gas pipeline that connects the liquefied gas markets in Southern Europe with Central and Central-Eastern Europe. It passes through Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova, and Ukraine, and also allows gas to be transported from Turkey to Hungary, Slovakia, and Poland.

According to Energy Minister Svitlana Hrynychuk, the route through the Trans-Balkan corridor expands Ukraine's access to resources from the south and allows it to purchase gas from new exporting countries.

As of August 2025, 20% of the Trans-Balkan gas route's capacity has been reserved, and market demand is growing.
