War update: 68 combat clashes in Ukraine over past day

Ukraine’s Defense Forces engaged with Russian invasion troops 68 times along the frontlines on Sunday.

That’s according to the General Staff, Ukrinform reports.

"During the day of January 21, there were 68 combat engagements. The enemy launched a total of four missile strikes and 102 airstrikes, as well as 80 MLRS attacks at the positions of Ukrainian troops and at various settlements. Unfortunately, Russia’s terrorist attacks killed and wounded civilians. Private residential and apartment buildings, and other civil infrastructure facilities sustained damage and destruction," the report says.

Yesterday, the Russian invaders launched another barrage of 10 Shahed-136/131 type one-way attack drones. Eight UAVs were intercepted.

Russian airstrikes hit the settlements of Hrafske, Vovchansk, Mykolaivka, Vilkhuvatka, Ivanivka, Kislivka, Tabaivka, and Pishchane of Kharkiv region; Makiivka, Serebryanske Forestry in Luhansk region; Yampolivka, Hryhorivka, Minkivka, Bohdanivka, Chasiv Yar, Kostiantynivka, Toretsk, Severne, New York, Lastochkyne, Avdiivka, Staromaiorske, Rivnopil, and Novomykhailivka of Donetsk region; Chervonyi Maiak, Zmiivka, Novoberyslav, and Vesele of Kherson region.

More than 100 settlements in Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Dnipropetrovsk, Kherson, and Mykolaiv regions came under Russian artillery fire.

The Volyn and Polissia axes saw no significant changes.

Sivershchyna and Slobozhanshchyna axes: the adversary maintains its military presence in the areas of Russia bordering Ukraine. Enemy troops conduct active subversive activities in order to prevent the deployment of Ukrainian troops to other war zones.

Kupiansk axis: Ukrainian defenders repelled seven enemy attacks near Synkivka (Kharkiv region).

In the Lyman direction, Ukrainian soldiers repelled five attacks near Terny and Yampolivka, Donetsk region, and another six – near Bilohorivka, Luhansk region.

Bakhmut axis: the Ukrainian Defense Forces repelled seven assaults east of Hryhorivka, Bohdanivka, Ivanivske, and Klishchiivka (Donetsk region).

Avdiivka direction: Ukrainian defenders continue to hold back the enemy’s continued attempts to besiege the town. Ukrainian soldiers are standing their ground, inflicting major losses on the invaders. The Ukrainian Defense Forces repelled five attacks in the vicinities of Novobakhmutivka, Stepove, and Avdiivka, and 12 more attacks south of Severne, Pervomaiske, and Nevelske (Donetsk region).

In the Marinka direction, Ukraine’s Defense Forces continue to hold back the enemy in the Heorhiivka and Novomykhailivka areas of Donetsk region, where five attacks were repelled.

The Russians ran no assaults in the Shakhtarske direction.

Zaporizhzhia axis: the Ukrainian defenders repelled seven attacks west of Verbove and Robotyne.

Kherson axis: the Ukrainian Defense Forces continue to expand the existing bridgehead. Despite significant losses, the enemy does not abandon attempts to dislodge Ukrainian troops from their positions. On January 21, the adversary attempted six unsuccessful assaults at the Ukrainian positions.

At the same time, Ukrainian soldiers continue to actively inflict losses on enemy manpower and hardware, exhausting the adversary along the entire front line.

The Ukrainian Air Force launched air strikes on nine Russian manpower and weapons clusters.

The Ukrainian missile troops hit an enemy cluster, a command post, three artillery systems, and an air defense system.

As reported by the ISW think tank, Russia’s air defense forces are failing to effectively protect the airspace over Leningrad region.
