Kostin, ICC representatives visit Kherson region
The press service of the Prosecutor General's Office wrote this on Telegram, Ukrinform reports.
In Antonivka, the Prosecutor General inspected the site of the actual crime committed by the Russian Federation.
As Kostin emphasized, "this is the biggest environmental disaster since Chornobyl, so we are investigating not only a war crime, but also an ecocide."
"The situation is very difficult: entire settlements and districts of Kherson city are under flood water, a number of dangerous objects have been flooded. Among them are at least three cemeteries, oil product storage terminals, and landfills. 450 tonnes of turbine oil spilled into the waters of the Dnipro River and the Black Sea," the Prosecutor General said.
Given the complexity of the situation, an unprecedentedly large group of prosecutors has been assembled. It includes 172 prosecutors from four regional prosecutor's offices, the Specialized Environmental Prosecutor's Office, and the War Crimes Department
“We are coordinating efforts, consolidating evidence that is already available in various units. We are establishing what happened on that night when the Kakhovka HPP was blown up," Kostin said.
According to the PGO, the same approach is being applied to the interagency investigative team. It will include 285 investigators from the Security Service and the National Police from several regions and central offices. Leading international experts will be also engaged.
As Ukrinform reported, on the night of June 6, the Russian forces blew up the dam of the Kakhovka HPP, causing the flooding of areas in Kherson and Mykolaiv regions. Evacuation of people from the areas affected by flooding is ongoing.
