Ukraine’s court sentences Russian soldier to life in prison for killing civilian

The Solomyansky District Court of Kyiv has sentenced Russian soldier Vadim Shishimarin to life in prison for killing a civilian in Sumy region, northern Ukraine.

"The court finds Vadim Shishimarin guilty of committing a criminal offense under Part 2 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine and sentences him to life imprisonment," the presiding judge read out the sentence, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

The precautionary measure until the sentence comes into force was left unchanged – detention.

According to Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, ill-treatment of prisoners of war or civilians, expulsion of civilians for forced labor, looting of national values ​​in the occupied territories, use of means of warfare prohibited by international law, other violations of laws and customs of war, as well as giving an order to commit such acts, are punishable by imprisonment for a term of eight to twelve years. Pursuant to Part 2 of the Article, the same acts, if combined with premeditated murder, are punishable by imprisonment for a term of ten to fifteen years or life imprisonment.

Russian soldier Vadim Shishimarin, who shot dead Ukrainian civilian, Oleksandr Shelipov, in Sumy region on February 28, was the first Russian serviceman to stand trial in Ukraine over the full-scale Russian armed aggression since February 24. He pleaded guilty and explained his actions by execution of an order.
