70 Japanese men, including 50 former members of Japan’s Self-Defense Forces and two veterans of the French Foreign Legion, have applied to join Ukraine’s fight against Russian invaders.

According to Ukrinform, this was reported by Reuters with reference to the Japanese media.

A spokesperson for the Ukrainian Embassy acknowledged receiving calls from people “wanting to fight for Ukraine,” but declined to give further details. As an example, the agency noted an office worker, Keiichi Kurogi, 39, who wanted to come to Ukraine to join the "International Legion."

"When I saw photos of elderly men and women in Ukraine clutching their weapons and departing to the front, I felt I had to be with them," Kurogi said.

The embassy declined Kurogi’s offer to fight, telling him that he lacked the necessary military experience.

As Ukrinform reported, President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Ukraine is creating an International Legion of Territorial Defense consisting of foreigners who wants to join the resistance to the Russian occupiers and to protect world security.
