Car crash in Kyiv leaves four dead: Court orders driver held without bail

The Shevchenkivskyi District Court of Kyiv has ordered the driver of a Mercedes-Benz, who is suspected of causing a fatal car crash that left four people dead, to be held in custody without the possibility of bail.

According to Ukrinform, the Prosecutor General's Office reported this.

On Monday, June 8, at the request of investigators and juvenile prosecutors from the Kyiv City Prosecutor’s Office, the court ordered the 49-year-old driver held in custody until August 3, without the right to bail.

The position of the prosecutor’s office in court was supported by Deputy Head of the Kyiv City Prosecutor’s Office Anton Yefimov.

The accident occurred on June 5 at around 5:00 p.m. on Chokolivskyi Boulevard in Kyiv.

According to the investigation, the Mercedes-Benz was speeding, veered off the roadway onto a curved section, and crashed into an underground pedestrian underpass where people were present.

Four pedestrians were killed in the accident—two local police officers, a woman, and a 12-year-old boy. Three other people were injured.

The driver was detained and charged under Part 3 of Article 286 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine—violation of traffic safety rules resulting in the death of several people.

“It has been established that the man was sober at the time of the accident. However, since January 2025, he has been brought to administrative liability 10 times for traffic violations, including 5 times for speeding,” the prosecutor's office noted.

Under the charged article, the suspect faces up to 10 years in prison with a suspension of his driver’s license for up to 3 years.
