OSCE demands Sushchenko's release

Ukrinform
The OSCE has demanded the release of Ukrinform journalist Roman Sushchenko.

OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media Harlem Desir said this in a statement on June 4, according to an Ukrinform correspondent.

"Journalism is not a crime and media workers should carry out their work under safe conditions, without fear of being harassed, attacked or imprisoned," Desir said.

He expressed hope that the decision to convict Sushchenko would be overturned in appeal.

"I reiterate my call on the Russian authorities to release the journalist from prison," Desir said.

On June 4, the Moscow City Court sentenced Sushchenko, a correspondent of the Ukrainian National News Agency, Ukrinform, to 12 years in prison in a high-security prison on espionage charges. He has been under arrest in Moscow since September 30, 2016.
