Ukraine will support its athletes and create the necessary infrastructure for them, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

The head of state said this at a meeting with the medal winners of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and their coaches, the presidential press service reported.

"We will build an infrastructure that other national teams will envy. Ukraine will support our great athletes with dignity," Zelensky said.

According to him, today the state is dealing with the creation of sports infrastructure, paying more attention to the needs of athletes and coaches.

Zelensky congratulated the Olympians on their successful performance at the Olympic Games, where they won 19 medals.

"You have earned so many medals with your hard work. I understand how difficult it is to prepare for the Olympics during the COVID-19 pandemic. You have all done well. You have won," he said.

At the same time, the head of state raised the issue of creating conditions for the return to Ukraine of strong coaches who are now training athletes for other countries, as well as conditions for attracting foreign specialists.

He said that a national program for the development of sports infrastructure would be presented during the visit by President of the International Olympic Committee Thomas Bach to Ukraine in September.

Zelensky also spoke in favor of holding the Olympic Games in Ukraine in the future. "We never had them. I am not sure this will happen in our time, but we will definitely build everything to make it easier for future generations," he said.

The president presented state awards to athletes who won gold, silver and bronze medals at the 2020 Olympics and to their coaches.

The 2020 Summer Olympics were held in Tokyo (Japan) from July 23 to August 8.

Team Ukraine won 19 medals at the 2020 Olympics, including one gold, six silver and 12 bronze medals, taking 16th place by the total number of medals and 44th place by the number of gold medals.
