More than 1,500 flights canceled in U.S. amid shutdown – WP

Despite hopes for an end to the U.S. government shutdown, as of Monday, more than 1,500 flights have been canceled nationwide, with many others delayed due to the inability to properly compensate air-traffic controllers.

According to Ukrinform, The Washington Post reported this.

“More than 1,500 flights have been canceled for Monday and hundreds of others delayed, according to the tracker FlightAware, with disruptions ticking up by the hour,” the publication notes.

Yesterday was the worst day for U.S. air travel during the current shutdown — nearly 3,000 flights were canceled on Sunday, and more than 10,000 were delayed.

Although the Senate reached a bipartisan agreement overnight that will allow temporary restoration of funding for government agencies, the longest shutdown in U.S. history continues. Monday became a record 41st day since the country’s federal structures have gone without funding.

U.S. Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy stated that the situation in airports will “only going to get worse” if the shutdown continues, as air-traffic controllers working without pay are beginning to look for other jobs to cover their bills.

As reported by Ukrinform, late Sunday evening, the U.S. Senate approved, during a procedural vote, an amended bill previously adopted by the House of Representatives. The document provides for restoring government funding through 30 January 2026. It will include a package of three full-year appropriations bills. To end the shutdown, the Senate must approve the document during the main vote, after which it must be supported by the House of Representatives and signed into law by the President of the United States.
