Several thousand people have lined up from the Shevchenko monument to the Mykola Lysenko National Academic Opera and Ballet Theater in Kharkiv to pay respects to the late mayor, Hennadiy Kernes, according to an Ukrinform correspondent.

The funeral ceremony is open to everyone. The area near the theater is guarded by more than 400 police officers and servicepersons of the National Guard of Ukraine, with private guards staying on duty inside the building.

Kernes died from COVID-19 complications at the Charite Clinic in Berlin on the night of December 16-17.
