Over 48,000 citizens forced to leave occupied Crimea since 2014
"Since 2014, history repeats itself on the occupied peninsula. The Russian occupation authorities continue to persecute the Crimean Tatar people for their religious beliefs and disagreement over the occupation. Intolerable living conditions, numerous illegal searches, detentions, imprisonment make the indigenous people of the peninsula leave Crimea. More than 48,000 citizens have been forced to leave the occupied territory of Crimea and move to the government-controlled territory of Ukraine," Deputy Prosecutor General Giunduz Mamedov said, the press service of the Prosecutor General's Office reports.
At the same time, he noted that Russia was actively colonizing the territory of the peninsula: during the occupation, the aggressor country has resettled almost 73,000 [Russian] citizens to the occupied territory directly or indirectly.
In early 2020, the Prosecutor's Office of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea together with the human rights NGO "Regional Center for Human Rights" sent the seventh information message to the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court about the forced displacement of the population of Crimea.
The Prosecutor's Office of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea also provides procedural guidance in criminal proceedings over the genocide of the Crimean Tatar people and representatives of other national groups (Part 1 of Article 442 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine) by forcible resettlement of the peninsula's indigenous population and other national groups from the territory of Crimean Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic to the territories of the union republics and regions of the USSR in 1944.
The pre-trial investigation established that 250,000 people, including 193,865 representatives of the Crimean Tatar people, were forcibly deported from the territory of the Crimean Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic during 18-20 May 1944.
