ICAO ready to join probe into UIA plane crash in Iran

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) is ready to join the investigation into the crash of Ukraine International Airlines flight PS752 in Iran, according to a statement posted on the organization's website.

"ICAO is in contact with the States involved and will assist them if called upon," the statement reads.

The organization also called for an end to any speculation into the probable cause of the crash before a professional investigation is completed.

"Its leadership is stressing the importance of avoiding speculation into the cause of the tragedy pending the outcomes of the investigation in accordance with Annex 13 of the Convention on International Civil Aviation (Chicago Convention)," the statement said.

A Ukraine International Airlines plane (flight PS752), en route from Tehran to Kyiv, crashed shortly after taking off from the Imam Khomeini International Airport at about 06:00 Tehran time (04:30 Kyiv time) on Wednesday, January 8.

There were 176 people on board the aircraft - 167 passengers (including two Ukrainians) and nine crew (all Ukrainians). Most victims of the Ukrainian plane crash in Tehran are citizens of Iran (82) and Canada (63). The crash also killed ten Swedes, four citizens of Afghanistan, three Germans, and three Britons.
