The students of the Kherson State University found 9-million-year-old remains of a whale on the shore of the Kakhovka water reservoir in southern Ukraine.

“The students of the Kherson State University found the remains of a whale on the shore of the Kakhovka water reservoir. Such rare findings are a real treasure for scientists,” the Kherson Plus local TV channel reports.

As assistant professor of the Socio-Economic Geography Department of the Kherson State University Mykola Homaniuk stated, these remains date back over 9 million years.

Archaeologists identified that the remains found are the caudal vertebrae of the Cetotherium, an extinct genus of baleen whale whales from the family Cetotheriidae.

The remains were found in the village of Mala Lepetykha, Kakhovka district, Kherson region. In prehistoric times, this territory, like the entire Kherson region, was covered with water.
