Eight Ukrainians died of influenza in last week

In the period from January 7 to January 13, 2019, eight people in Ukraine died of influenza complications, the Health Ministry’s press service reports.

"From 7 to 13 January 2019, eight deaths from influenza were registered. During the reporting week, 176,381 people fell in with influenza and ARVI, 51.8% of whom were children under the age of 17. Compared to the previous week, the sickness rate grew by 20.1% among adults and decreased by 2.4% among children under the age of 17. Since the beginning of the epidemic season 2018-2019, 19 people have died of influenza (three of them were children under the age of 17),” the Health Ministry reported.

At the same time, the ministry stressed that flu sickness rate is lower than the epidemic threshold.

"Epidemic thresholds are exceeded in four regions: Chernihiv region (by 34.2%), Zhytomyr region (by 13.7%), Sumy region (by 10.7%) and Odesa region (by 2%). In general, the flu sickness rate in Ukraine is 11, 7% lower than the epidemic threshold. According to the laboratory examination, results obtained from 43.7% of materials confirmed flu, A (H3) viruses predominate," the Health Ministry reported.
