October 15, a mural depicting Pope John Paul II was opened in Pechersk district in Kyiv city center.

"Unveiling this mural testifies to the constant expression of friendship and remembrance of the person who supported Ukraine, freedom and peace," Polish ambassador to Ukraine Jan Pieklo said at the unveiling ceremony, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

He quoted the words of John Paul II saying that history should unite Ukrainians and Poles.

"Ukrainians and Poles should overcome historical misunderstandings, which still exist in both societies, and build their relations on friendship and mutual respect," the diplomat stressed.

The mural was painted by an Austrian artist, who asked not to be named.
