Canadian intelligence prevents Russians from acquiring sanctioned goods

Canadian intelligence agencies successfully prevented several attempts to illegally export sanctioned goods to Russia.

According to a correspondent for Ukrinform, Daniel Rogers, Director of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) stated this at a briefing.

"Illicit Russian procurement networks seek to illegally acquire Canadian goods and technologies which they move to Russia through a complex series of front companies based around the world. Once in Russia, these Canadian products are then used to support Russian military efforts in Ukraine and elsewhere," Rogers said.

According to him, the intelligence service has managed to halt several similar Russian procurement operations this year.

"This year, CSIS took action to prevent this by informing several Canadian companies that Europe based front companies seeking to acquire their goods were in fact connected to Russian agents. These companies not only took immediate action to deny the Russians their success, but they also expressed gratitude and interest in working together to counter any future Russian activity," he said.

As Ukrinform reported, in May of this year, three Ukrainians were arrested in Germany and Switzerland for alleged intelligence activities aimed at sabotage on German territory in favor of Russian state agencies. They are accused of agreeing to commit aggravated arson and cause explosions.

In June 2024, citizens of Russia, Ukraine, and Armenia were arrested in Germany on suspicion of espionage. The accused are suspected of working for a foreign intelligence service.
