The United Kingdom is interested in expanding bilateral cooperation with Ukraine, in particular toward the safe handling of nuclear materials and the production of alternative energy sources.

That’s according to the British Ambassador to Ukraine, Melinda Simmons, who spoke during her official visit to the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant, Ukrinform reports with reference to the SSE ChNPP press service.

"We are very interested in finding new ways to cooperate with Ukraine, especially with regard to the safe management of nuclear materials and production of alternative energy sources," Ambassador Simmons said, according to the report.

The envoy was also briefed about the operations of a new safe confinement, which had covered the obsolete "Shelter" facility, a structure erected over the NPP’s fourth power unit damaged in the deadly reactor explosion of 1986.

Following the visit, the diplomat expressed gratitude for the opportunity to visit the Chornobyl NPP, saying the United Kingdom is proud to have been Ukraine’s partner in what had been achieved at the site over the past decades.

As Ukrinform reported earlier, 45 countries provided EUR 2.1 billion for the construction of a new confinement over Chornobyl NPP’s destroyed power unit.
