Average consumer prices for sugar grew to UAH 28.69 per kilogram in Ukraine in September 2021 compared with UAH 14.94 per kilogram in September 2020.

Head of the State Statistics Service Ihor Verner said this at a meeting of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Economic Development, which was dedicated to the price situation on the sugar market in Ukraine, an Ukrinform correspondent reported.

Verner noted that the market is experiencing an increase in sugar imports, in particular due to cane sugar. Ukraine increased sugar imports from such partner countries as Brazil, Poland, Germany and Lithuania.

As reported, in 2020, the sugar refining season in Ukraine began on September 5, with 30 sugar refineries operating across the country. Ukraine produced 1.1 million tonnes of sugar, which is 25% less than in the previous year.

As of November 1, 2021, Ukraine produced 722.7 thousand tonnes of sugar and processed 5.30 million tonnes of sugar beet, according to the Ukrtsukor National Association of Sugar Producers of Ukraine.
