Ukraine’s cast iron production grows by almost 8%

In January-July 2021, Ukraine’s cast iron production grew by 7.8% compared with the same period last year, Ukrinform reports.

According to Ukrmetalurgprom, Ukraine’s enterprises in January-July 2021 produced 12.65 million tonnes of pig iron (up 7.8% from the same period last year); 12.73 million tonnes of steel (up 7.4%); 11.33 million tonnes of rolled metal (up 6.4% more).

As of August 12, 2021, the following main operating production facilities were in operation: 19 out of 21 blast furnaces, 7 out of 8 open-hearth furnaces, 14 out of 16 converters, 5 out of 15 electric-arc furnace and 16 out of 17 continuous casting machines.

In January-July 2021, the provision of enterprises with iron ore raw materials (IORM) was carried out in accordance with the needs of metallurgical production. There were no IORM imports over the reporting period, whereas IORM exports came to 26.08 million tonnes (down 3.5% from January-July 2020).

In January-July 2021, 7.64 million tonnes of coking coal were delivered to Ukrainian coking plants (down 0.5% from the same period last year), including 2.30 million tonnes of Ukrainian-produced coal and 5.34 million tonnes of imported coal.

The total amount of coke purchased by Ukrainian enterprises over the reporting period came to 4.876 million tonnes (up 3.6% from January-July 2020), including 4.709 million tonnes of Ukrainian-produced coke and 0.167 million tonnes of imported coke.

In addition, in January-July 2021, 2.22 million tonnes of scrap metal were collected (up 42.0% from the same period last year). Ukraine’s exports of scrap metal amounted to 335,000 tonnes, which is 18.4 times higher than in January-July 2020.

In January-July 2021, domestic steelmaking industry consumed about 1.15 billion cubic meters of natural gas (up 7.5%) and 6.70 billion kWh of electricity (up 4.5%).

As Ukrinform reported, according to Ukrmetalurgprom, Ukraine’s enterprises in 2020 produced 18.59 million tonnes of pig iron (up 0.7% from 2019); 20.62 million tonnes of steel (down 1.1%); and 18.43 million tonnes of rolled metal (up 1.2%).
