Ukraine and the United States need to deepen their strategic dialogue on energy as an effective tool for accelerating decarbonization processes.

That’s according to a report by the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine, released following a meeting between Energy Minister German Galushchenko, United States Embassy’s Chargé d'Affaires Kristina Kvien, and USAID Mission Director James Hope in preparation for President Volodymyr Zelensky's visit to Washington.

"During our visit to the United States, it is important that we discuss the prospects of deepening the strategic energy dialogue. The issue is closely related to climate change and concerns the tasks we set toward decarbonization through energy transformation and energy security," Galushchenko said.

He also said that Ukraine plans to decommission, 90% worn obsolete units at thermal power plants. According to the minister, along with synchronizing the grid with the European ENTSO-E energy system and achieving Ukraine's integration into European energy markets, this will become an important part of the process of overall decarbonization of the European Union's electricity.

In addition, Galushchenko noted that Ukraine sees significant potential for deepening partnership with Westinghouse in terms of security, completion of new units for Ukrainian nuclear power plants, and supply of nuclear fuel to NPPs.

As reported, the White House has confirmed that the D.C. meeting of the two presidents, Joe Biden and Volodymyr Zelensky, is set to take place on August 30.

Security, including in the energy sector, as well as reforms, including that of the judiciary, are on the agenda of the upcoming talks.
