Kuleba, Habeck discuss negative impact of Nord Stream 2 on security in Europe

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba and Germany’s Alliance 90/The Greens Co-chair Robert Habeck discussed the negative impact of the Nord Stream 2 geopolitical project on security and stability in Europe.

This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.

“What worries us most is that Nord Stream 2 poses numerous security challenges. There is no doubt that once the construction is completed, Russia will use this project as a tool to advance its geopolitical interests, including in the context of the Normandy format efforts and in the Trilateral Contact Group. And it's not only about the threat to the security of Ukraine, but also of the whole of Europe," Kuleba said.

The minister stressed that international partners should step up their efforts to oppose the completion of the construction of Nord Stream 2.

In turn, Habeck expressed solidarity of the Green party with Ukraine on this issue. The German politician said that the party is aware of the risks of the project for Germany and Europe as a whole and opposes its implementation.

The interlocutors separately discussed security in the Joint Forces Operation (JFO) area in eastern Ukraine.

Kuleba noted that Russia’s withdrawal of a certain number of troops from Ukraine’s border partially reduced the level of tension, but did not lead to de-escalation. In this context, he told Habeck about the efforts that the Ukrainian side is making to promote a political and diplomatic settlement. The minister stressed the importance of close cooperation between Ukraine, Germany and France in order to force Russia to fulfill its obligations within the Normandy format.

Kuleba thanked the German Green party for supporting the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders.

As Ukrinform reported, on May 24, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky discussed with Germany’s Alliance 90/The Greens co-chair Robert Habeck the risks associated with the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.
