Shmyhal: Ukraine needs state strategy to support domestic airlines

Ukraine needs to develop a state strategy to support domestic airlines in connection with negative consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal has stated.

"We must intensify work and shape a state strategy to support domestic air carriers in connection with the negative consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. It is important to complete this process as soon as possible so that Ukrainians receive safe and high-quality services," Shmyhal said at a meeting dedicated to the development of domestic airlines, Ukrinform reports referring to the Government portal.

The Prime Minister stressed that the financial capacity and stability of domestic airlines are a guarantee of available air transportation for Ukrainians, increasing tourist demand and a stimulus for the development of the economy as a whole.

He added that in the context of signing the Common Aviation Area agreement with the European Union, the support of domestic airlines plays a key role.

During the meeting, Infrastructure Minister Vladyslav Kryklii told about possible mechanisms of state support for Ukrainian airlines.

Following the meeting, Shmyhal instructed Kryklii to work out decisions on support for domestic air carriers by February 22.

Earlier, in an interview with Ukrinform, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said he expects the agreement on the Common Aviation Area of Ukraine and the European Union will be signed during a working visit of President of the European Council Charles Michel to Ukraine on March 2-3.
