Ukrainian president to sign banking bill into law this week

Ukrinform
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said he intends to sign into law a bill introducing amendments to some legislative acts of Ukraine to improve some mechanisms for banking regulation as this will help sign a memorandum with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in May.

He said this during a press conference dedicated to the results of the first year of his term in Kyiv on Wednesday, according to an Ukrinform correspondent.

"Now I will sign the banking law - the last requirement for signing a memorandum between the state of Ukraine and the International Monetary Fund. We will sign this memorandum. I am sure we will sign it in May. This cannot be delayed. The banking law will come to me tomorrow or the day after tomorrow, and maybe even today," Zelensky said.

According to him, this will open the door for help from the IMF, which the government is counting on.

Verkhovna Rada Chairman Dmytro Razumkov said on May 19 that the bill would be submitted to Zelensky for signature in the near future.

On May 13, the Verkhovna Rada approved at second reading and as a whole a bill introducing amendments to some legislative acts of Ukraine to improve some mechanisms for banking regulation. In particular, the document will make it impossible to cancel the NBU's decision to nationalize/liquidate banks and return unfair compensation from the state budget to their previous owners.
