Merkel advocates for increasing investment in Ukrainian GTS

German Chancellor Angela Merkel advocates for increasing investment in the Ukrainian gas transmission system in order to enhance its competitiveness.

“Angela Merkel, for her part, noted that the next task was to increase investment in the Ukrainian GTS to enhance its competitiveness,” the press service of the President of Ukraine reports following the telephone conversation between President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky and German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Volodymyr Zelensky said he was pleased with the compromise reached and the conclusion of the new contract, and thanked Germany for the mediation.

On December 30, Ukraine and Russia signed a five-year contract on transit of Russian gas to Europe through the territory of Ukraine. The minimum guaranteed volume of transited gas is 65 billion cubic meters for the first year and 40 billion cubic meters for the next four years.
