Ukraine has to return $1.6 billion to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) by the end of the year, the press service of the Cabinet of Ministers has reported, citing figures from the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU).

KYIV, October 2 /Ukrinform/. Ukraine has to return $1.6 billion to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) by the end of the year, the press service of the Cabinet of Ministers has reported, citing figures from the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU).

"$4 billion has already been paid to the IMF since the beginning of 2013. By the end of the year it's still necessary to return SDR 1.046 billion (an equivalent of $1.6 billion) to the IMF," reads the statement.

At the same time, Ukraine's debt to the IMF as of September 1, 2013 stood at SDR 4.39 billion. SDR 2.416 billion has to be repaid in 2014 and SDR 0.976 billion in 2015.

According to the State Treasury Service, in the first eight months in 2013 government spending on servicing external debt amounted to $6.37 billion, whereas spending on the repayment of external debt was UAH 20.31 billion. Receipts under external government borrowing stood at UAH 17.98 billion.

According to the NBU, as of August 1 this year, foreign liabilities of the sectors of general government management and monetary authorities (the government and the NBU) have declined to $29.32 billion since the beginning of the year. In the first half of the year the debt of the public sector in relation to GDP fell by 1.1 percentage points, from 18.3% to 17.2%.
