Germany to provide Marder, Patriot to Ukraine

Germany announced a decision to send Marder IFVs and a Patriot battery to Ukraine. This became known after telephone conversations between U.S. President Joe Biden and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on January 5.

During the conversation, the leaders exchanged views on Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine and announced the intention to provide Ukraine with armored vehicles, the Federal Chancellor’s Office reports.

President Biden and Chancellor Scholz expressed their joint determination to provide Ukraine with the necessary financial, humanitarian, military, and diplomatic support as long as it takes.

"For this purpose, the USA intends to provide Ukraine with Bradley IFVs, and Germany – with Marder IFVs," the statement says.

Both countries plan to train the Armed Forces of Ukraine to use the vehicles.

Against the background of missile and drone attacks on Ukraine's critical infrastructure, President Biden and Chancellor Scholz reaffirmed their intent to continue providing support to respond to Ukraine's urgent needs for air defense capabilities. At the end of December, the USA announced that it would transfer a battery of Patriot air defense system to Ukraine.

"Germany joins the United States in providing another battery of Patriot air defense system," the German government informs.

President Biden and Chancellor Scholz praised the military support provided to Ukraine by other allies and partners, noted the ongoing coordination efforts of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, and welcomed additional deliveries of air defense systems and fighting vehicles.

The leaders confirmed their support for the independence, territorial integrity, and sovereignty of Ukraine. They confirmed unwavering solidarity with Ukraine and the Ukrainian people in the fight against the aggressor – the Russian Federation.
