U.S. House of Representatives approves $250 mln for Ukraine's defense

The lower house of the U.S. Congress has passed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2019, which foresees the allocation of $250 million in security assistance to Ukraine.

Ukraine's Embassy in the United States announced this on Thursday, July 26, Ukrinform reports.

"The House of Representatives of the U.S. Congress supported the allocation of $250 million in security assistance to Ukraine," reads the report.

It specifies that assistance is envisaged in a section of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2019.

"The amount of funds allocated to the U.S. Department of Defense for the provision of security assistance to Ukraine is estimated at $250 million. Of this amount, $50 million should be directed for lethal weapons," the embassy said.

The U.S. defense budget includes the main clauses of the Ukraine Cybersecurity Cooperation Act. It foresees assistance to the Ukrainian side to increase the scope of protection against cyberattacks. In particular, the U.S. Department of State is instructed with submitting to the Congress a report on the state of cooperation with Ukraine in the field of cybersecurity in order to find new directions for such interaction and its support.

According to the procedure, the bill on the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2019 should be supported by the Senate and signed by the U.S. president.
