Most UN countries back proposal for peacekeepers in Donbas - Poroshenko
He stated this at a meeting with residents of Avdiyivka on Sunday, October 22, the press service of the head of state reported.
In particular, Poroshenko said that everything must be done to force the aggressor country to withdraw its occupation forces, arms, artillery and military equipment, disarm illegal formations and allow Ukrainian troops to control the border.
He recalled that in 2015 he made a proposal on UN peacekeepers in Donbas.
Poroshenko said that most UN countries supported Ukraine in 2017.
"I am doing everything for peacekeepers to be deployed to Donbas. This means that they will stop shooting in Donbas. This means that with joint efforts we will bring peace to Donbas," Poroshenko said.
According to the president, peacekeepers will be able to take control of an uncontrolled section of the Ukrainian-Russian border, so that troops do not return and that ammunition and tanks are not supplied. "The authority of the UN and the strength of the UN Security Council should ensure that people with weapons no longer shell either Ukrainian soldiers or Ukrainian civilians," Poroshenko said.
The president also thanked residents of the city, which many foreign delegations have recently visited. "You are doing an extremely important business. You're creating a fantastic image of Ukrainians in the world," Poroshenko added.
