A Ukrainian conscript, 20, shot dead five of his comrades-in-arms and a civilian woman, wounding another five soldiers at the Pivdenmash military and space plant, which he guarded as part of the National Guard unit in the eastern Ukrainian city of Dnipro.

That’s according to the National Police.

The attack, the motives of which are yet to be investigated, occurred overnight Thursday, January 27.

The culprit fled the crime scene and police immediately scrambled to locate and arrest the attacker.

This morning, the suspect reportedly surrendered to police in one of the nearby villages, according to Minister of Interior Denys Monastyrskyi, Ukrinform reports.

The soldier has reportedly contacted the police and surrendered, the State Bureau of Investigation said.

Minister Monastyrskyi said the attacker, who comes from Odesa region, will face “the most severe” punishment for his act.

At the same time, inspections have been appointed to find out whether the conscription protocol, including mental examination, has been followed properly. Also, the inquiry will look into possible harassment which could lead to a deadly shooting.
