Ukraine's army commander: Drones have changed warfare, but tanks are still vital on battlefield
In an interview with TSN, Shapovalov said that modern warfare and technological advances – particularly drones – have reshaped the role of tanks and artillery, Ukrinform reports.
"Today the role of both tanks and artillery has changed. This stems from the realities on the battlefield and technological development. Drones have changed many things," he said.
According to the commander, the principles of how tanks are deployed have also evolved. At the same time, some Ukrainian units continue to use them effectively, including for direct-fire missions.
Shapovalov stressed that the time has not yet come to abandon tanks, noting that they remain well-protected platforms with powerful weapons and continue to serve as an important means of supporting infantry operations.
On June 16, 2025, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky appointed Shapovalov commander of the Ukrainian Ground Forces.
